Biscuits and Bisquick was not an ingredient!

Biscuits and Bisquick was not involved!

Biscuits and gravy are a staple in the Midwest and I would like to think that more and more people are trying to make things from scratch and keep away from the processed foods. Unfortunately, I have discovered that some people consider following the directions on a Bisquick box is from scratch. I hate to disappoint, but it still has enough ingredients that are unpronounceable without a chemical or medical degree.
Here is a recipe that tastes wonderful and is really not that hard to do. You can start this in your mixer with a paddle attachment. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.
  • 13.3 oz. A.P or Pastry Flour
  • .25 oz. Salt
  • .7 oz. Sugar
  • .7 oz. Baking powder
  • 4.7 oz. butter, cold, small pieces
  • 8 oz. Milk or buttermilk
  1. Sift the dry ingredients together, make sure it is blended thoroughly.
  2. Mix in the butter until the mixture looks mealy.
  3. Add the milk and stir until the mixture holds together.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and knead it until it forms one mass and the dough becomes smooth.
  5. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 in thickness and then use a biscuit cutter or a cup that have been floured then place them on a paper lined sheet pan.
  6. Bake at 425 until the tops are light brown or about 10 – 12 minutes.
  7. Remove the biscuits and let cool.
Every ingredient is pronounceable and it tastes good too.
If you want to make it sweet you can add more sugar. Some would use these for strawberry shortcake. I just prefer strawberry jam.
Have a great day, and as always make life sweet and Enjoy!
